Liposuction

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure whereby fat is removed from stubborn areas that haven’t responded to diet and exercise. Common areas in which liposuction is useful in addressing are hips, thighs, buttocks, and belly.

How is it performed?

Liposuction is undertaken in an accredited private hospital. Large volumes of local anesthetic are infiltrated into the areas of concern. Small incisions are made in the skin through which a cannula is inserted. These cannulas are attached to a vacuum, which then allows your surgeon to move back and forth, suctioning fat cells in doing so.

What is the recovery process?

Liposuction is generally performed as a day procedure; however, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours. A compression garment is recommended for 8-12 weeks, depending on the areas that have been addressed.

Who is a good candidate?

Liposuction is most beneficial in patients who are in good health, don’t smoke, and have firm, elastic skin. Because liposuction only addresses excess fat, not skin, it is not usually recommended in patients who have undergone significant weight loss.

Are there any risks?

As with any invasive procedure, there are risks. Serious risks include bleeding, infection (in some cases, life-threatening), and damage to organs. Other risks include asymmetries and contour deformities. In order to reduce these risks, it is important to receive treatment from a qualified specialist.
