Eyelids
What is a blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure which alters the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids. With ageing, the eyelid skin can sag, the muscles of the eyelids weaken and there is a redistribution of fat. Blepharoplasty can address these changes and provide a more natural, youthful appearance.
What does it involve?
Upper and lower eyelid surgery are quite different and entail very different procedures and risks. During your initial consultation with Dr. Anavekar, she will discuss these differences with you. With further discussion, she will find out what your main concerns are and how best to treat them.
Surgery is performed in an accredited private hospital, and anesthesia will be required. Depending on the exact nature of the surgery required, it may be recommended for you to stay in the hospital overnight. The surgery itself can take between 1 and 2 hours.
What happens after surgery?
In the days after surgery, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The eyes may feel “gritty” for the first 24-48 hours. It is important to rest with your head elevated and to apply cool packs in order to ensure a smooth recovery. You should allow 1-2 weeks to recover at home prior to re-engaging in work and social commitments.
Following your discharge from the hospital, you will have appointments to see Dr. Anavekar and her Practice Nurse during the first 6 weeks post surgery. Additional appointments may be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
