It occurs when the tendons in this area become inflamed or irritated, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the thumb and wrist. The condition is often caused by repetitive hand or wrist movements, such as gripping, pinching, or lifting.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and tenderness near the base of the thumb
  • Swelling around the wrist and thumb
  • Difficulty moving the thumb, especially when gripping or pinching
  • A “sticking” or “snapping” sensation in the thumb

Causes & Risk Factors:

  • Repetitive wrist or thumb movements
  • Activities like texting, gaming, lifting a baby, or using tools
  • Pregnancy or postpartum hormonal changes
  • Arthritis or direct injury to the wrist

Treatment Options:

  • Resting the wrist and avoiding repetitive motions
  • Wearing a splint to immobilize the thumb and wrist
  • Applying ice to reduce swelling
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., ibuprofen)
  • Physical therapy or stretching exercises
  • In severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be needed.
