The hand is an extremely complex component of the human body. Its function relies on the intricate relationship between bones, tendons, muscles, and nerves. There are several conditions that can impair the proper functioning of one’s hand. What to bring to your consultation:

It is important that you bring a valid GP referral to your initial consultation with Dr Nam Anavekar. If you have any investigation results, including Xrays, Ultrasound results, blood results or nerve conduction study results, please bring them with you, as it will help establish a management plan for you. 

What happens after your consultation?

Depending on the outcome of your consultation, you may be required to undergo further tests, see a hand therapist, or It may be appropriate to schedule surgery.

What happens if I need surgery and how do I prepare?

Hand surgery is often undertaken in a hospital setting as a day case procedure. You will need someone to pick you up from hospital and be present with you for 24hrs following surgery. Please remove all jewellery, including rings and bracelets, from the hand being operated on. Please bring any relevant investigation results with you. 

If you have any open wounds on the hand being operated on, please report this to our rooms as soon as you can as it may affect your ability to proceed with surgery. 

You will be advised regarding any medications that may need to cease prior to surgery. Please cease smoking at least 6 weeks prior to surgery. 

Postoperative care information

You will be provided with a sling postoperatively. Please keep you hand elevated (ie. above heart level) until your postoperative review appointment in order to improve swelling and pain. 

You will be provided with pain relief medications. It is normal for you hand to feel numb for several hours as the local anaesthetic is wearing off. 

Please keep your dressings clean and dry until your first postoperative visit. Cover with a plastic bag when showering.  You are not permitted to drive during this time.  

Further instructions regarding driving will be provided during your postoperative visit. In general, allow for 2 weeks of no driving, and 6 weeks of no heavy lifting.
