Breast augmentation

Breast Augmentation

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is surgery which is designed to increase breast size. This is generally achieved with the use of breast implants which are placed either under the breast tissue itself, or under the muscles of the chest wall.

Why undergo breast augmentation?

There are several reasons women may wish to increase the size of their breasts:

  • they feel their breasts are too small
  • they feel one breast is significantly smaller than the other
  • correct loss of breast volume following surgery for other breast conditions
  • improve their self esteem
  • restore the volume of their breasts following pregnancy and breastfeeding

What does it involve?

First, you will have a consultation with Dr Anavekar. At this consultation, you will be asked what your wishes are in terms of size, shape and expectations. Dr Anavekar will ask you some questions and perform an examination to ensure you are fit for surgery and to assess which type of surgery she feels will best suit your needs. Dr Anavekar will then discuss with you the procedure of breast augmentation surgery. Some of the points discussed will include:

  • type of implant (shape, volume and size)
  • size and placement of the incision
  • where the implant will be placed (under breast tissue or under muscles)
  • recovery time and what to expect after surgery
  • risks of surgery

All breast augmentation procedures are undertaken in an accredited private hospital, under general anaethesia with a qualified anaesthetist. The operation generally takes approximately 2hours.

What happens after surgery?

Following surgery, it is recommended that you stay overnight in hospital. Patients feel uncomfortable for several days, and it is therefore advised to take 2 weeks off work and ensure you have appropriate help at home if needed. Activities are slowly increased, however heavy lifting should be avoided for 6weeks. A soft, supportive bra, without an underwire needs to be worn for at least 6 weeks. You will be able to drive once you feel comfortable.

At minimum, you will have review appointments with Dr Anavekar immediately after surgery, one week following surgery, and 6 weeks after surgery. Any additional or ongoing reviews will be scheduled as needed.

BODY CONTOURING

What is abdominoplasty?

A “tummy tuck”, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen. It involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen, whilst also tightening the underlying muscles.

Why undergo abdominoplasty?

There are several reasons why one’s abdomen may become lax and have a “sagging” appearance. The most common are following:

  • significant weight loss;
  • pregnancy
  • surgery which results in weakness of abdominal muscles

Often, non surgical measures are unable to correct the excess skin and fat which result from the aforementioned conditions. An abdominoplasty can address these issues and improve self confidence.

What does it involve?

During your initial consultation with Ms Anavekar, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns and goals related to undergoing an abdominoplasty. She will ask you questions and perform a clinical examination to ensure you are fit for surgery and to formulate a plan for you.

Ms Anavekar will discuss the operation with you, as well as the potential risks involved. The surgery will be performed at an accredited private hospital under a general anaesthetic provided by a qualified anaesthetist. The surgery takes approximately 3 hours. You will be required to stay in hospital for 1-2 nights.

What happens after surgery?

Ms Anavekar will review you whilst you are in hospital. It is normal to feel some discomfort for the first few days following surgery. You will be required to wear a tight fitting abdominal garment for 6 weeks. It is advised that you take 2-3 weeks off from work, and to avoid any heavy lifting for 6 weeks.

Following your discharge from hospital, you will see Ms Anavekar 1 week, 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months after surgery. Additional appointments will be made as required.

FACIAL AESTHETICS

What is a facelift?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a procedure designed to restore a youthful appearance to the face. As a result of normal ageing processes, facial skin and soft tissues descend, giving a “sagging” appearance. A facelift addresses these signs of aging by repositioning facial soft tissue and trimming excess skin.

What does it involve?

During your initial consultation with Dr Anavekar, she will discuss what your main concerns are and the appearance you wish to achieve. She will ask you some questions to ensure you are fit for surgery. Dr Anavekar will then discuss in detail the procedure involved, the recovery period and potential risks.

The surgery is performed in an accredited private hospital and takes approximately 3-4hours. It is performed under general anaesthesia will a qualified anaethetist. You will be required to stay in hospital for 1-2nights. Dr Anavekar will see you following your surgery, and prior to discharge from hospital.

What happens after surgery?

In the days after surgery, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort, swelling and bruising. It is important to rest with your head elevated and to apply cool packs in order to ensure a smooth recovery. You should allow at least 2 weeks to recover at home prior to re-engaging in work and social commitments.

Following your discharge from hospital, you will have appointments to see Dr Anavekar after 1, 2, 3 and 6 weeks after surgery. She will also see you 6 and 12 months after surgery. Additional appointments may be scheduled on an as needed basis.

Breast lift/mastopexy

What is a breast lift/mastopexy?

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a procedure designed to reposition and reshape the breasts so that they are in a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position.

Why undergo a breast lift?

Often, as the result of aging, weight loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding, the shape and volume of breasts change. The breast can often have a “deflated” appearance as a result of these changes. Breast lift surgery aims to restore the natural, youthful appearance of the breasts.

What does it involve?

During your initial consultation with Dr Anavekar, she will discuss what your main concerns are and the appearance you wish to achieve. She will ask you some questions and perform an examination to ensure you are fit for surgery and to assess which procedure will best suit you.

The surgery is performed in an accredited private hospital and takes approximately 3hours. It is performed under general anaesthesia will a qualified anaethetist. You will be required to stay in hospital for 1-2nights.

What happens after surgery?

You will feel particularly uncomfortable for the first 48hours. This discomfort rapidly improves with each day. You will be able to drive once you feel ready to do so. It is recommended that you take 2-3weeks off from work, and that you have adequate support at home if needed. You must avoid heavy lifting for 6 weeks, and during this time you must wear a soft, firm fitting, wireless bra.

At minimum, you will have review appointments with Dr Anavekar immediately after surgery, one week, 3 weeks and 6 weeks after surgery. Any additional or ongoing reviews will be scheduled as needed.

Breast reduction

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery reduces the amount of skin, tissue and fat from the breasts. It is designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts, whilst simultaneously enhancing the shape.

Why undergo breast reduction?

There are several reasons why a patient may wish to undergo breast reduction surgery. Some of these reasons include:

  • ease neck and back pain which may be due to heavy breasts
  • achieve a more proportionate appearance
  • improve self esteem
  • improve the ability to participate in physical activities

What does it involve?

During your initial consultation with Dr Anavekar, she will find out what issues may be the result of heavy breasts, what your wishes and expectations are, and whether breast reduction surgery would be of benefit for you. She will then ask you some questions about your health and perform an examination to ensure that you are fit and safe to undergo surgery. Dr Anavekar will then go through the operation with you, as well as the risks, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and have any concerns addressed.

The surgery is performed in an accredited private hospital and takes approximately 3hours. It is performed under general anaesthesia will a qualified anaethetist. You will be required to stay in hospital for 1-2nights.
